So You Just Drove Your Car Into A River, Now What?

PrepareNowStore.com 3/17/2015

OK so your day isn’t going well and you and your car are in the river and the water is coming up.

First: Unbuckle your seat belt, find the door handle and unlock the door. Even electric door locks will most likely work for a short while. Otherwise reach over calmly and manually unlock the door. Your first task is to get your seat belt unbuckled and make sure the door is unlocked. Don’t be in a panic to open the window because that will cause the car to sink. You have to try to stay calm; panic will not help you. You’ve seen this enough times on TV to know that the car will not sink instantly. You very likely have several minutes before the car sinks. Now if you have an emergency car window breaking / seat belt cutting tool reach for it now and hang onto it.  I can’t say it enough times an emergency car window breaking / seat belt cutting tool is less than $10 and it can make the difference between life and death.

Second: As the car begins to fill with water, lower the window and exit the car.

Three: Now we get to the hard part. If the window doesn’t open:

If you have the window breaking tool in your hand use it now.

If you don’t have the tool, you have to wait for water to fill the car. That will help equalize the pressure and make breaking a window easier. Try to kick out one of the side windows. Realize that as long as there is air inside the car, water pressure will hold the doors closed and opening them will be almost impossible.  This takes us to our last possible chance to escape; hopefully after enough water has filled the car you just might be able to force the door open. After this there is nothing.

Buy a car emergency kit with an emergency car window breaking / seat belt cutting tool. Don’t leave the tool in the trunk with the emergency kit, have it within easy reach inside the car.
